American actor Tom Hanks has urged his fans not to trust a video of him circulating about a dental plan.
The Hollywood icon has issued a warning on the video that features an artificial intelligence (AI) version of himself, claiming that he has no association with the dental plan.
In his Instagram post, Mr Hanks wrote, “BEWARE!! There’s a video out there promoting some dental plan with an AI version of me. I have nothing to do with it,” alongside a computer-generated image of himself from the video.
Mr Hanks, known for his roles in blockbuster films like “Asteroid City” and “The Polar Express,” has been open about the growing use of AI in the film industry.
“We saw this coming,” Hanks stated during an appearance on The Adam Buxton Podcast in May.
“We saw that there was going to be this ability to take zeros and ones inside a computer and turn it into a face and a character. Now that has only grown a billionfold since then, and we see it everywhere.”
Hanks also discussed the potential for AI to continue an actor’s career even after their passing, presenting both artistic and legal challenges.
AI technology and celebrity faces have been a crucial part of negotiations in the ongoing Hollywood strikes.
This conversation around AI in the entertainment industry comes after strikes by both the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) concerning AI-related issues in their contracts.
While the writers’ strike recently ended with new protections for writers against AI-generated scripts, the actors’ strike is ongoing, with negotiations scheduled to resume on October 2.
