Three dead in Western Highway crash near Ararat

Three people have died in a multi-vehicle crash that has closed the Western Highway in both directions near Ararat in western Victoria.

Police say two cars, a B-double truck and two smaller trucks collided just after 12:30pm near the intersection of Thomas Road at Armstrong.

A car driver died at the scene, along with two occupants of one of the trucks. Another car driver was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are attending the scene.

Motorists are being diverted via Moyston, with detours adding more than 20 kilometres to travel times. The highway, which links Ararat and Horsham, is expected to remain closed for several hours.
