The Voice Referendum: Early Voting Opens Today

Early voting for the voice referendum opens in some states and territories today.

Voters in Victoria, Tasmania, Western Australia and the Northern Territory can all vote from today, while other states and territories, early voting opens tomorrow due to the public holidays.

While the referendum day is October 14, early voting is available for people with legitimate reasons. This includes working on the day, being out of your electorate on referendum day or travelling. You won’t need to provide proof of this.

You can access information about early voting centre locations, opening days, and hours via the AEC website and their voting centre location tool.

The deadline for early voting applications is Wednesday, October 11, at 6pm local time.

Voting is compulsory for all enrolled Australians. If you are overseas or would like to do a postal vote, you can also apply for this on the AEC website

The question you’ll be asked is:

A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?

You will be able to answer “yes” or “no”.

Unsure? The Briefing explored both sides of the debate.

They spoke to Yes leader Noel Pearson about the campaign’s progress and what they need to do next. While No campaigner Warren Mundine outlined why he believed the Voice won’t make the impact it’s intended to.
