The Truth About Domestic Violence | The Briefing Special Series

Welcome to The Briefing series: The Truth About Domestic Violence.

Hosted by Antionette Lattouf, we delve into the pressing issue of domestic violence in Australia. From where it starts in younger Australians, delving into support services, to what it’s like when your abuser is also the person who is meant to help you – we lift the lid on one of Australia’s biggest problems.

Intimate partner violence will impact one in six women and one in 16 men in Australia. It’s one of the main drivers of homelessness among women, children and men; on average, one woman every nine days and one man every month is killed by a current or former partner. We speak to survivors, advocates and experts in this comprehensive series.

LISTEN: When police become perpetrators

You’ve may have noticed there’s been more of a push in recent years to help people better identify domestic violence in all its forms, and in particular to encourage victims to report incidents of domestic and sexual violence to police. But what happens when your perpetrator is a police officer?

We speak to a woman we’re calling Audrey. She’s chosen to share her experience for the first time, because she thinks serious questions need to be asked about how good police are at policing themselves when it comes to family violence.
