The Eerie Truth Behind Shrimp Jesus And ‘Dead Internet Theory’

You might have come across Al-generated images of ‘shrimp Jesus’, or similarly strange content on Facebook, often with absurdly high numbers of likes and comments.

It all connects with the ‘dead internet’ theory, that bot-created content accounts for more and more online content. The theory suggests AI manipulates social media users and minimizes human activity online.

Joel Pearson from Future Minds Lab explains the bizarre world of artificial intelligence and bad bots on The Briefing:

Bots now account for nearly half of all internet traffic globally, with so-called “bad bots” responsible for a third.

UNSW Future Minds neuroscientist and psychologist Joel Pearson said the growing AI content saturation will see users drop off platforms.

“Once the loops closed and it’s Al is reacting to Al eyes and humans are going to get bored with it,” Pearson said.

Forbes reported bad bots account for 71 per cent of online traffic in Ireland, and 68 per cent in Germany.

“The internet will kind of be dead or this dead for humans. It’ll still be flourishing with tons of back and forth between Als and Al systems,” he said.
