The Biggest Australian Sports Moments Of 2023

It was yet again another year of many memorable – both good and bad- sporting moments for the country that simply can’t get enough!

The list could have been endless, but here are just five of the sport moments we won’t forget that happened in 2023.

5. Collingwood secure 16th premiership

You either love them or you hate, but regardless of your feelings, we all watched Collingwood secure its 16th premiership.

Collingwood secured a four-point win against the Brisbane Lions to equal Carlton and Essendon for the most VFL/AFL top honours secured.

4. Victoria pulls the pin on 2026 Commonwealth Games

Former Victorian Premier Dan Andrews announced the state would no longer host the 2026 Commonwealth Games back in July.

He claimed the Games would cost between $6-7 billion which Victoria could not afford.

The Games still remain withoiut a host city, while and inquiry has been heard to uncover what exactly went wrong.

3. LIV Golf makes its Australian debut

The controversal Saudi-financed LIV Golf series made a triumphant Australian debut in Adelaide back in April.

The likes of Cam Smith, Talor Gooch and Anirban Lahiri were on display for the over 90,000 fans who attended.

It was so succesful, the SA government secured the rights to the event for the next three years.

2. Australia stun India to win World Cup

Travis Head belted one of the greatest centuries in ODI World Cup history to lead Australia to a 137-run win against India.

The best part? The Aussies’ sixth ODI trophy was won against the home team, which up until the final, remained unbeaten.

1. The Matildas capture our hearts

The Matildas became the first national Australian team to make it to the semi-final of the FIFA World Cup.

The Tillies’ home-soil performance broke attendance, television, and merchandise sale records.

The side was so influential, that it led to the Australian National Dictionary Centre selecting “Matilda” as the country’s word of the year.
