Environmental groups are calling out supermarkets for charging significantly more for loose produce compared to plastic-wrapped fruits and vegetables.
The Australian Marine Conservation Society and Boomerang Alliance report that in 72 per cent of cases, loose produce costs more.

Meanwhile, the report reveals supermarket chains are failing to meet plastic reduction promises.
“It encourages people to buy more packaging and more plastic because they see it’s a cheaper price,” AMCS plastics campaign manager Cip Hamilton said.
A review by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) shows Australia is on track to fail targets for phasing out unnecessary single-use plastic packaging by 2025.
Aldi achieved a 20 per cent reduction score. Coles came second with 15 per cent, followed by Woolworths with 10 per cent.
Transparency, as well as policy, planning and governance, were also factored in.
