The US Secret Service has arrested a suspect in the theft of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s purse at a Washington restaurant.
Officials did not name the suspect but described him as a serial offender with no direct threat to Ms Noem, the former South Dakota governor appointed by former President Donald Trump.
“The investigation revealed alleged criminal activity, including potential device and credit card fraud,” Secret Service agent Matt McCool said. The agency will retain jurisdiction and present its findings to federal court.
Ms Noem’s purse was stolen on Easter Sunday, containing about $US3,000 ($4,700) in cash, her passport, driver’s licence, house keys, and Homeland Security badge. DHS said she had the cash to pay for Easter gifts and family activities.

According to reports, the suspect hooked Ms Noem’s purse with his foot under her chair, dragged it across the floor, and concealed it with a coat.
Washington Metropolitan Police later arrested 49-year-old Mario Bustamante Leiva on Saturday over two separate robbery incidents in April. Authorities said he faces additional charges related to Ms Noem’s stolen purse.
“This individual is a career criminal who has been in our country illegally for years,” Ms Noem said, thanking police and the Secret Service for their efforts.
Federal authorities have not confirmed the suspect’s immigration status.
Security experts raised concerns about the breach. Former Secret Service agent Jonathan Wackrow told CNN the incident “needs immediate and further review,” citing Ms Noem’s high-profile role and the elevated risks she faces.
Despite security concerns, District Attorney Ed Martin told NBC there is no evidence Ms Noem was targeted because of her position. “It was a nice-looking purse,” he said, adding the suspect appeared experienced.
Trump-appointed officials have emphasized a strong stance on charging and deporting individuals found to be living illegally in the US. Martin said authorities do not expect the suspect to return to US streets.
Ms Noem, who has been a vocal supporter of tougher immigration policies, is responsible for overseeing national security efforts against terrorism and other threats.
