The rescue efforts on Thursday were suspended due to night falling, with rescuers unable to detach the rope wrapped around the whale.

On Friday morning, the whale was situated off Bradleys Head with an exclusion zone in place. Boats with wildlife services are circling the whale.

The juvenile humpback is at least one of free to be entangled by rope this week in New South Wales.

Volunteer rescue group Orrca said on Wednesday that entangled whales had been spotted travelling towards Byron Bay, Evans Head and Newcastle.

“The behaviour of entangled whales can be unpredictable and they can change directions of travel,” Orcca said on social media.

“As such, we are asking for anyone who can get out on headlands between Newcastle and Tweed Heads to please keep a lookout for these whales.”
