Queensland’s Iconic ‘Go Cards’ To Be Replaced

South East Queensland’s beloved ‘Go cards’, are set to make way for a new fare card system.

However, the exact transition timeline remains undecided, with Translink yet to announce a launch date.

The public transport agency has confirmed that the new fare pass will be dubbed the “Translink card”, offering commuters access to public transport services across the region. 

It will introduce the convenience of linking the card to smart devices, enabling commuters to leave their physical cards at home.

This transition is part of Translink’s broader initiative to implement smart ticketing across its network, allowing passengers to tap on and off using credit cards, debit cards, or smart devices. 

According to a spokesperson from Translink, the new Translink card will provide commuters with faster data processing, advanced privacy and data security features, compared to the current go card.

“The go card will be progressively replaced by an equivalent smartcard payment option in the new account-based smart ticketing solution,” they said.

“The Translink card will be available for customers who wish to pay with a standalone payment card that can be topped up and managed just like they do with their current go card.”

Moreover, concession fares will continue to be available on the Translink card.

Customers can also opt for refunds of their Go card funds upon transitioning to the Translink card.

The spokesperson said the rollout of smart ticketing has already commenced on Brisbane ferries and CityCats, with plans for expansion to buses in the future.
