QLD Approves Psychedelics And MDMA For Mental Health Treatment

Queenslanders will soon have access to two psychedelic drugs for the treatment of certain mental health conditions under new changes to medicine regulations by the state government.

Under the new changes, Queenslanders can access psilocybin and MDMA to treat specific mental health conditions.

MDMA is better known as one of the main components in ecstasy while psilocybin is found in magic mushrooms.

The changes to regulation were made by the state government on June 16 in a bid to meet national standards set to be introduced on July 1.

To manage the distribution of the two drugs, only approved psychiatrists will have the authority to provide prescriptions.

Following the national changes to come into effect on July 1, psychiatrists will be able to prescribe MDMA and psilocybin for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and treatment-resistant depression.

The use of psilocybin and MDMA outside of these conditions is still illegal.

The changes come after Queensland passed laws allowing people to carry a small amount of cocaine, heroin and ice three times before being formally charged by police.
