Police to escort Burma the elephant down Southeastern Freeway

South Australia Police are working with Zoos SA to escort Burma the elephant, arriving from New Zealand, to her new home at Monarto Safari Park.

42-year-old Burma was Auckland’s only elephant and will be the first elephant in South Australia for 30 years.

Burma will travel in a heavy vehicle from the airport, through the metropolitan area and along the Southeastern Freeway. 

South Australia Police (SAPOL) released a statement, “The truck will be travelling at a lower speed limit, especially as it will be peak-hour traffic on Glen Osmond Road.”

The predicted time of departure from the airport is about 5pm. SAPOL listed Burma’s route:

Monarto Safari Park wrote, “We are thrilled to welcome [Burma] to her forever home, where she is the first of five Asian Elephants who will form a herd by the end of 2025.”

Monarto Safari Park said their priority is Burma’s welfare during her travels.

“Everyone involved in Burma’s transfer has a job to do, and we need to remain focused on doing that and getting Burma to her new home, safe and sound and as quickly as possible.”
