Police say it’s a miracle more weren’t killed in Riddells Creek kindergarten tragedy

Police say it’s a miracle there weren’t more deaths after an out-of-control truck ploughed into a Riddells Creek kindergarten on Monday.

Special needs carer Eleanor Bryant, 43, lost her life as she pushed children out of the McKenzie Water truck’s way at Macedon Ranges Montessori Pre-School.

Ms Bryant died at the scene, leaving behind her 11-year-old son and nine-year-old daughter.

A three-year-old boy was taken to Royal Childrens Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Christian Von Tuck said he couldn’t believe only one person had lost their life in the tragedy.

He said it appeared the truck hit a bridge and multiple road signs before crashing into the kindergarten’s playground.

“It’s a tragic set of circumstances which actually could have been a lot worse,” he said.

“This is one of those close calls that, I don’t know how only one person has died today.

“It’s unbelievable.”

The truck driver, a 68-year-old man from Broadford, was taken to hospital for observation and will be interviewed by investigators.

Alan McKenzie, owner of McKenzie Water said the “experienced 68-year-old driver is understood to have suffered a medical episode”.

“We are in shock and offer our heartfelt condolences to everyone involved,” he said.

“This is an incredibly distressing time, and our deepest sympathies go to those involved and their families and friends.”

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident will be investigated. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam/CCTV footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit the website.
