Police respond to dozens of incidents during Melbourne New Year’s Eve celebrations

Victoria Police seized illegal fireworks, weapons, and responded to dozens of incidents during New Year’s Eve celebrations across Melbourne.

Police arrested 14 individuals for weapon possession and confiscated 23 weapons, including hunting knives, imitation guns, swords, and a machete, primarily at train stations.

 One man in St Kilda was caught carrying five knives and drugs.  

Assistant Commissioner Chris Gilbert said targeted operations at major transport hubs were crucial in maintaining public safety. 

“There is absolutely no reason for these items to be brought into the city,” Mr Gilbert said.

Authorities also handled 287 reports of fireworks-related incidents. 

A 47-year-old man in St Kilda was arrested after erratic driving led to the discovery of illegal fireworks and drugs in his vehicle. 

At Safety Beach, police found two boxes of commercial-grade fireworks, with a 50-year-old man set to be interviewed. 

In Blairgowrie, a teenager was hospitalised with non-life-threatening stab wounds after an assault involving a group. 

Two 16-year-old boys were arrested, and one was charged with intentionally causing injury.  

Victoria Police are also investigating an incident at a Starbucks on Swanston Street, where staff reported being spat at and subjected to anti-Israel chants before items were stolen. 

Starbucks Australia confirmed all employees were safe and pledged cooperation with authorities.  

Meanwhile, Ambulance Victoria reported treating over 60 patients during the night, with seven requiring hospitalisation.
