PM to pledge discounted childcare for 70,000 extra families

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will make an election pitch to families today, announcing Labor’s plan for universal childcare by scrapping the activity test for subsidies.

The test currently determines the level of childcare subsidies based on the number of hours parents work.

In released excerpts of the speech to be delivered today, Albanese is announcing one of his pre-election pledges.

The pledge is to “ensure every family can afford three days of high-quality early education,” Albanese’s speech states.

If re-elected, Albanese will promise to scrap the scheme and allow families earning less than $530,000 a year access to the assistance for three days a week.

The scheme will offer five days of childcare for people who work, study or volunteer for 48 hours a fortnight.

The latest poll results in December show the Coalition is leading Labor 51.8% to 48.2%, two-party-preferred.

However, the PM has faced calls to resign from some members of the Jewish community after his response to the arson attack on a Melbourne synagogue.
