Huge crowds gathered across Australia last weekend to protest laws that see high-risk offenders released on bail, as anger mounts over the soaring domestic violence death toll.
Kay Schubach, a domestic violence survivor, said victims’ rights and safety aren’t being protected by the courts, which are releasing offenders back into the community too readily.
Kay Schubach told The Briefing what really needs to change to stop more Australian women dying:
“They get out on bail and they drive straight to the woman that they’re angry with and murder them,” said Schubach.
Questions are rising about how judicial systems can break the cycle of post-custody attacks by high-risk domestic violence offenders.
This year a woman has been lost to violence at the hands of a man every four days.
“They need to work through their anger. And someone needs to deem that they’re not reformed and until they’re reformed, they should not be back in the community,” she said.
