The 2024 Paris Olympics officially begin tomorrow morning our time, and a lot has changed in the 100 years since the city last hosted the Games.
The 33rd hosting of the summer Games will feature 329 events in 32 sports. More than 10 and a half thousand athletes from 206 nations will participate, and over 11 million tourists filling stadiums.
In this episode of The Briefing, Sacha and Bension break down what you need to know to be an uber Olympics fan – from breakdancing to BMX, and from canoeing to taekwondo.
Listen now:
The new sports:
There is only one new sport to feature at Paris this year – breaking, or what we know as break dancing.
Rachael Gunn and Jess Dunne will represent Australia.
“Sadly though, breaking’s been dropped for the 2028 games in LA, so this might be a one off.”
“If you want to see break dancing at the Olympics, make sure you’re watching this year.”
Medal tally:
Early predictions see Australian bringing home 13 gold medals as apart of a 48-medal. haul.
That would see us sit in fifth behind the USA, China, Great Britain, and hosts France.
What does Sacha and Bension think?
“I’m putting us up to 16 gold. I reckon we can equal our record in Sydney, which was 16 back in 2000. And I reckon we might edge up into fourth.”
“And let me just say I am in no way, shape or form qualified to predict final Olympic medal tallies!”
To find out more about the Olympics, you’ll have to listen to the epsiode!
The Opening Ceremony begins at 3.30am Saturday AEST.
