A man, believed to be in his 30s, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for gunshot wounds but died at the scene.

There were no other injuries reported.

Detective Acting Superintendent Jason Pietruszka said the victim was shot from outside the vehicle.

“A person unknown approached from the road, went up to the driver-side window, and fired multiple shots into the window,” he said.

Police confirmed the man exited the car after being shot and ran a short distance before succumbing to his injuries.

Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty stated that the shooting was being treated as an organised crime-related murder under Strike Force Loughrea.

He alleged that the victim had connections to Asian organised crime syndicates and was involved in illicit drug activity.

“There’s still a lot we don’t know, and a lot of information we need to gather, including identifying the shooter,” Detective Superintendent Doherty said.

Shortly after the shooting, emergency services were called to a nearby suburb, Wakeley, where an abandoned car was found on fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW quickly extinguished the blaze.

Police believe the shooting and the car fire are linked.

Investigations are ongoing, with homicide detectives from State Crime Command assisting Fairfield City Police Area Command.

Police are appealing to the public for information.
