The new Greens leader, Larissa Waters, says she wants to bring the party back to its original roots, with a focus on the environment and the daily needs of Aussies.
“People elected us to get shit done and that’s what we intend to do in the service of people and the planet,” Waters said.

Back in 2010, Waters was the first person ever to be elected to the Greens in Queensland.
Yesterday she was unanimously chosen as the party’s fifth-ever federal leader.
The new Greens leader said the party will have “heart”. She said the Greens will continue fighting for women’s rights and equality, and its stance on Gaza and housing.
Senator Mehreen Faruqi will be the party’s deputy and the party’s new portfolio will be selected ahead of parliament’s return in a couple of weeks.
Meantime, there’s been less celebrating and more stewing for the coalition that’s at loggerheads right now over the party’s future.
New Liberal leader Sussan Ley says it’ll take time for the Liberals and Nationals to figure out a new agreement. It comes amid talks for a push to axe their net-zero policies.
She met with National’s leader David Littleproud yesterday to discuss portfolios, and says progress is happening, slowly but surely.
