More Israeli airstrikes in Gaza as death toll climbs

World leaders have condemned Israel after it launched further air strikes on Gaza, which have killed more than 400 people, many of those children.

This comes after a stall in ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel.

Hear more from today’s headlines on The Briefing:

Israel is blaming Hamas for the renewed strikes, after the group denied requests to extend the first phase of the deal, which ended at the beginning of the month.

Originally, an end to phase one would trigger phase two, which were discussions for a permanent and lasting ceasefire and exchange of all remaining hostages and prisoners.

Neither side has agreed to what the next phase will look like and is blaming the other for the lack of progress.

Hamas has said the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to do strikes is a death sentence for the remaining hostages.

Israel’s defence minister has vowed to press ahead with the conflict until all remaining hostages released.

Overseas outlets report that the strikes were the largest since January this year.
