Advertising through social media, Mr Portelli claims to give away millions of dollars via giveaways that are then live-streamed.
Portelli’s company, LMCT+ claims to be a “rewards club”, offering shopping discounts for a monthly fee. As part of that fee, members also receive entries to win cars and properties.
An investigation by Consumer and Business Services South Australia found Portelli is running a trade promotion lottery and in SA those lotteries with prizes above $5000 require a license and entries must be free of charge.
He is now facing nine counts of conducting and/or assisting in the conduct of an unlawful lottery, while his company is facing 10 counts on the same charge. The maximum penalty is $10,000.
Portelli is due to face court on 15 January next year.
