Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were forced to evacuate their official residence after an alleged arson attack.
Authorities have arrested 38-year-old Cody Balmer in connection with the incident.
The fire broke out around 2 a.m. at the Governor’s Residence, a historic 29,000-square-foot mansion along the Susquehanna River. Governor Shapiro, his wife Lori, their children, and guests were asleep when Pennsylvania State Police alerted them to the blaze.
All occupants, including the family’s dogs, evacuated safely without injury.

Investigators allege that Balmer scaled the property’s fence, entered the residence, and ignited multiple fires using a homemade incendiary device. The southern portion of the mansion sustained significant damage, particularly in areas used for hosting events.
The fire occurred just hours after the Shapiro family celebrated the first night of Passover with a Seder dinner.
Balmer, a Harrisburg resident, was apprehended later that day following a manhunt. He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault. Authorities have not disclosed a motive but are investigating potential political or antisemitic factors.
Governor Shapiro, a Democrat considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate, expressed gratitude to first responders and condemned the attack as part of a disturbing trend of political violence.
He emphasised resilience, stating that the second Passover Seder would proceed as planned.
The FBI is assisting in the ongoing investigation, and officials are reviewing security measures at the Governor’s Residence. Political leaders across the spectrum have denounced the attack and voiced support for the Shapiro family.
