Man Rescued From Brisbane Drain After Attempting To Retrieve Phone

Emergency services rushed to Kangaroo Point in Brisbane following reports of a man trapped in a stormwater drain while attempting to retrieve his phone. 

The incident, which occurred Monday at around 11am on Castlebar Street, unfolded amidst persistent rainfall across the city.

A notice from the apartment complex’s management informed residents that a neighbour had heard cries for help and promptly called triple-0.

The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) received the call and found a man in his mid-30s stuck in the drain. 

He confessed to entering the drain to retrieve his phone but became wedged inside, estimating he had been trapped for “about 36 hours”.

Despite suffering abrasions, he was transported to the Mater Hospital in stable condition.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) spokesperson said firefighters had to open the lid and lift the man out as he was stuck beneath the bolted water drain cover.

Authorities said CCTV footage would be reviewed to determine how the man accessed the drain.
