Liberal Party to decide new leader tomorrow after Dutton resigns

The Liberal Party is set to vote on a new leader tomorrow, following Peter Dutton’s resignation after the party’s significant electoral defeat.

The leadership contest has attracted high-profile candidates, including Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor and Deputy Liberal Leader Sussan Ley.

Both have been actively campaigning to secure support from their colleagues.

Taylor announced his candidacy last Friday, focusing on economic growth, energy policy flexibility, and unity within the party to challenge the Labor government.

“I will provide leadership that unites our party, that outs our cause above sectional interests and that reaches beyond our base and earns the trust of the voters that we’ve lost,” Taylor said.

He has gained support from former Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, who plans to run for deputy leader.

In an Instagram post, Price described Taylor as a “mentor”, saying that the party is “in a really good position to come back from this and come back strong”.

Ley, on the other hand, is pushing for stronger representation of women.

Her campaign is backed by several former state and territory Liberal leaders.

She has expressed a commitment to reconnecting with broader communities, including women and minority groups, and modernising campaign messaging.

Meanwhile, Tim Wilson, a prominent Liberal Party member who recently reclaimed the Melbourne seat of Goldstein from independent Zoe Daniel, is emerging as a potential contender for the leadership.

Although he has not officially declared his candidacy, Wilson has hinted at his interest in leading the party.

The party room is set to vote on a new leader tomorrow.
