Labor pushes to raise minimum wage for lowest paid workers

The PM is expected to throw his support behind raising the minimum wage today, in a move that could benefit three million Australian workers.

The government is expected to meet with the Fair Work Commission to recommend a ‘real wage increase’, meaning wages are adjusted for inflation.

This will benefit the country’s award and minimum wage workers.

While it is just a recommendation, it does mark a shift from previous submissions where Labor had advocated for real wages not to go backwards.

The current national minimum wage is $24.10 an hour.

This comes after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese spent the day campaigning in South Australia and then Victoria yesterday.

Albanese announced a 150 million Medical Centre upgrade in Adelaide’s south, a promise the coalition has since matched. He also promised $5.5 million in facility upgrades for a netball club near the regional city of Geelong.

Labor currently holds both seats, the South Australian one marginally.

As for Shadow Minister Peter Dutton, yesterday he attended a winery in Melbourne’s north. There he announced his plan to cut $2.2 billion in federal funding from the Suburban Rail Loop project. He vowed to redirect the funding towards building an airport rail line.

He also took part in a community round table on crime and committed three million dollars to a bone marrow research charity started by AFL legend Nick Riewoldt.
