Kmart removes skincare product after teenager suffers eye injury

Kmart Australia has pulled a hyaluronic acid skincare product from its shelves following an incident where a teenager experienced eye pain after using it.

The 13-year-old girl experienced blurred vision and severe discomfort after the product accidentally entered her eyes during application.

Missy was rushed to the emergency department, spending six hours in the care of doctors.

Leah Ladson, Missy’s mother, said she flushed saline solution through Missy’s eyes at home before taking her to the hospital.

“Straight away she was complaining of blurred vision,” Leah shared in an Instagram video on Tuesday. “Then, very rapidly she was in a huge amount of pain and couldn’t open her eyes.”

The product in question is Kmart’s Hyaluronic Acid Cleansing Balm, which carries a warning to avoid contact with eyes.

However, the practicality of this caution has been questioned, especially considering the product’s intended use on the face.

In response to the incident, Kmart expressed deep concern and initiated a formal investigation into the product’s safety.

“Upon the customer contacting us, we immediately commenced a formal investigation with the customer, which is still underway.”

The company assures customers that its cosmetics comply with both Australian and European ingredient standards.
