Create a safe environment
Designate a quiet, secure area in your home where your pet can retreat from the noise. Close windows and play calming music or turn on the television to help muffle the sounds of fireworks. Ensure this space includes your pet’s favourite bedding and toys to provide comfort.
Exercise and feeding
Take your dog for a walk earlier in the day before the fireworks begin. A well-exercised and fed dog is likely to be more relaxed during the evening. Similarly, ensure cats have had playtime and are fed before the festivities kick off.
Check your pets’ ID tags
Confirm that your pet’s microchip information is up to date and that they are wearing a collar with an ID tag. In the event they become frightened and escape, this will increase the chances of a safe return.
Stay indoors
Keep pets indoors during fireworks displays. If possible, stay with them to provide reassurance. Never take pets to fireworks events, as the loud noises and crowds can be overwhelming.
Monitor behaviour
Observe your pet for signs of stress, such as pacing, panting, or hiding. Provide comfort without reinforcing fearful behaviour.
