It’s been one year since the horrific October 7 attacks on Israel. More than 1100 people were killed when Hamas militants poured over the border from Gaza, attacking neighbourhoods and the Nova Music Festival.
A further 240 people were taken hostage, more than 115 are still unaccounted for.
Jewish Australian Dan Monheit recalls the October 7 attack on today’s episode of The Briefing:
Since then more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in attacks launched by Israel. This follows Hamas’ attack and escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Jewish Australian Dan Monheit said “there was just the sort of shock and disbelief of what was happening in Israel.”
“Just seeing the thousands of rockets getting fired in and then hearing these stories about these terrorists coming through the Nova Dance Festival,” Monheit said.
Monheit’s cousin, Margalit Moses, was kidnapped from a kibbutz in Israel a year ago today. Margalit’s ex-husband Gaddi Moses was also taken.
“Twelve or 24 hours later we got a message saying Margalit and Gaddi have been taken. And there was footage of her, she [was] in her seventies,” he said.
“She was held with a group of other women and she sort of took on the role as the boss. And she speaks Arabic quite well soo she was the one able to communicate with the guards.”
In Australia, Jewish people have reported feeling unsafe and attacked for their religion in the wake of the events of October 7 and beyond.
