The property is about 90 kilometres north-west of Gympie, in a town with an estimated population of less than 100 people.

Police say they have found no connection with the human remains.

A police spokesperson said, “The search and recovery of remains by forensic officers is ongoing and may continue for several days.”

Forensic experts are trying to identify the remains.

What should you do if you find remains? Forensic anthropologist Samantha Rowbotham explains on this episode of Crime Insiders:

Australians happen across human remains more frequently than you’d think, and despite law enforcement’s best efforts, many still remain unidentified.

According to a study commissioned by the AFP in 2022, there are estimated to be 750 sets of unidentified human remains across the country, and many are integral to solving long-term missing persons cases.

A first step for many forensic experts trying to identify human remains is to take a DNA sample, and match it with various DNA databases.

But if DNA databases don’t bring up results, what do forensics do next? Find out on this episode of Crime Insiders.
