Chaos erupted at Charles University in Prague as a lone gunman, identified as a 24-year-old Czech student, opened fire, leaving at least 14 dead and 25 seriously injured.
Harrowing footage captured students leaping from building windows and clinging to rooftops in desperate attempts to flee.
Some barricaded themselves inside classrooms, while others were seen evacuating with arms raised, marching alongside authorities.
Police had been tipped off earlier in the day, knowing that the suspect, reportedly heading to Prague with intentions of suicide, had a scheduled lecture.
Despite evacuating the faculty of arts building, the shooter targeted the main building, resulting in the tragic incident.
President Petr Pavel labelled it “the most tragic in the history of the Czech Republic”.
Authorities warned the death toll could rise as 10 of the injured are in critical condition.
The shooter is also suspected in the recent killings of a man and his two-month-old daughter.
The incident has left Prague in shock, with crowds fleeing the historic district.
Police secured the area, and details about the victims are yet to be disclosed.
