Police had been tipped off earlier in the day, knowing that the suspect, reportedly heading to Prague with intentions of suicide, had a scheduled lecture.
Despite evacuating the faculty of arts building, the shooter targeted the main building, resulting in the tragic incident.
President Petr Pavel labelled it “the most tragic in the history of the Czech Republic”.
Authorities warned the death toll could rise as 10 of the injured are in critical condition.
The shooter is also suspected in the recent killings of a man and his two-month-old daughter.
