Greens set to elect new leader after Bandt steps down

The Greens are set to elect a new party leader following Adam Bandt’s decision not to recontest the role after five years at the helm.

Bandt, the federal Member for Melbourne, announced his decision earlier this month, saying it was time for “new energy and vision” to lead the party forward.

The party is now in the process of selecting his successor, with the internal election opening to all federal Greens MPs.

Several names are already being floated as potential contenders, including Greens senators Mehreen Faruqi, Larissa Waters, and Sarah Hanson-Young.

Faruqi, the party’s current deputy, was recently backed by both the Young Greens and the First Nations network. She is known for her outspoken stance on social justice issues.

Hanson-Young, a South Australian senator and the party’s longest-serving federal representative, has previously worked closely with Labor on environmental reforms.

Unlike the major parties, Greens leadership contests are typically low-profile.

If a single candidate is nominated for a position, they must be backed by consensus. If more than one MP nominates, a secret ballot is held.

The party is expected to confirm its new leader later today, with a press conference to follow.
