Gallipoli Forest Fire Threatens ANZAC War Graves

A large forest fire has engulfed ANZAC war graves, sparking fears for The Lone Pine Memorial, as Turkish fire crews are fighting to control the blaze.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “Our thoughts today are with those who continue to care for those cemeteries and welcome thousands of Australians to visit ANZAC headstones each year as they endure these difficult times.”

Fires broke out on the Gallipoli Peninsula earlier this week due to extreme temperatures and high humidity in the region.

Bushfires are being monitored by the Returned & Services League of Australia to ensure the protection of the historical WWII battleground.

It has not yet been confirmed if Australian war graves and memorials have been damaged in the bushfires.
