Thousands of families with school students will be eligible for free internet as the federal government extends its free School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI).
Due to end in 2025, the government announced the SSBI, which is already accessed by over 23,000 families, would be extended to June 2028 under a $4.9m boost.

Up to 30,000 families who have difficulty accessing internet connections will be eligible for the SSBI, and those who qualify will receive free internet until June 30, 2028.
The SSBI attempts to ease cost of living pressues and bridge the digital gap for unconnected families with school children.
Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said the SSBI would ensure more families didn’t have to deal with the “burden and uncertainty of mobile internet usage and data cost”, and allow for children to continue their education at home.
“The school student broadband initiative is making a serious difference for thousands of families who now are able to enjoy the benefits of having reliable internet at home – a must in our increasingly digital world,” she said.
Under the SSBI, families will receive a free Wi-Fi modem by their chosen internet provider. Devices included, phones, computers or laptops are not provided as part of the initiative.
