Eggs are set to be on the agenda at a meeting of the country’s agriculture ministers on Thursday.
The government have previously recommended that cage eggs be completely phased out following an independent review of animal welfare.
The review suggested that cages be phased out by 2036.
Despite the results of the independent review, industry advocates believe the rapid phase out could result in a spike in egg prices which would lead to compensation claims from egg farmers.
Farmers have suggested the phase-out deadline be extended to 2046.
Federal Nationals leader David Littleproud believes the 2036 deadline will compromise millions of dollars’ worth of investments from Australian farmers.
“Farmers have made investment decisions worth millions of dollars, predicated on the current guidelines, believing they had until 2046,” he said.
While the review has suggested cage eggs be phased out by 2036, supermarket giant Woolworths have revealed plans to phase out cage eggs by 2025.
