Just days after Graham Arnold announced his retirement, Tony Popovic has been appointed the Socceroos head coach.
Popovic’s appointment comes into immediate effect and will guide the Socceroos through the third round of the AFC Asian Qualifiers – Road to 26. He has signed until the end of the 2026 World Cup.
Matildas duo Chloe Logarzo and Emily Gielnik recently spoke with Antoinette Lattouf on The Briefing’s weekend edition. Listen to the chat here:
Popovic is a highly regarded figure in Australian football, having coached the Western Sydney Wanderers to the AFC Champions League title in 2014 and Melbourne Victory to the Australia Cup title in 2021.
Meanwhile, his A-League achievements include two championships: one with the Wanderers in the 2012/13 season and the second with Perth Glory in 2018/19. He also took Melbourne Victory to the 2023/24 grand final.
Popovic said he was honoured to be appointed to the role and was “grateful for the opportunity”.
“This is undoubtedly a very proud moment for myself and my family. To be entrusted with guiding our national team is a privilege that I do not take lightly,” he said.
“I fully understand the weight of responsibility and the high expectations that come with this position. The Subway Socceroos have a rich history and a passionate fan base, and I’m committed to living up to those expectations.
“Together, we will work tirelessly to improve, evolve, and continue Australia’s success on the international stage. I believe we have the talent and determination to make our nation proud.”
