New South Wales Police and protest organisers have struck a deal at the eleventh hour to allow rallies ahead of the first anniversary of October 7.
It comes after police applied to the Supreme Court to prevent events organised by the Palestine Action Group (PAG) on October 6 and 7, citing safety concerns.
Protests planned for October 6 will be held via an alternate route to avoid crowds passing the Great Synagogue in Sydney’s CBD.
Police expressed concerns the original path to pass the synagogue would be “provocative”.
In addition, NSW police said, “Protest organisers have agreed that no flags, portraits or symbols connected to a prohibited terrorist organisation will be displayed.”
“[Police will] work with organisers to conduct a high visibility policing operation on Sunday to ensure the safety of the community.
“Police will not hesitate to take appropriate action against anyone who commits a criminal offence.”
Meanwhile, the vigil planned for October 7 will also take place but will now be a standing vigil. Unlike a moving protest, it won’t require a permit from the organisers.
For the last 51 weeks, PAG has held demonstrations in Syndey with limited police intervention.
