The result comes as Coles prepares to sell close to 70 million hit cross buns around the Easter break, nearly 2.5 buns per person nationwide.

The findings show that traditional fruit buns continue to dominate the market, making up 40 per cent of all hot cross bun sales.

Coles General Manager for Bakery, Dairy and Frozen, Brad Gorman, said Australians’ appetite for buns is being driven by a mix of quality and innovation.

“Over the past years, we’ve surprised customers with exciting new flavours like Wagon Wheel and Iced VoVo, which have proven incredibly popular,” he said.

“It’s wonderful to see so many people enjoying our wide range, and we are proud to be part of our customer’s Easter celebrations.”

Victoria is set to be the nation’s top state in hot cross bun consumption, with almost 19 million expected to be sold.

Top three stores include Waurn Ponds, Taylors Hill and Coburg North.

However, Western Australians are eating the most per capita, averaging 3.5 buns per person, ahead of all other states and territories.
