The supermarket wars are heating up between Coles and Woolies, and it’s looking like there’s some silver lining in there for us.

Woolworths and Coles both announced price cuts on essentials that will kick in tomorrow.

Woolies promises savings of around 10 per cent until 2026

Woolworths has promised an average saving of $15 on a $150 weekly shop, pledging lower prices until 2026.

The supermarket giant is marking down almost four hundred products, including bread, rice, oats, and bacon, chicken schnitzel, Greek yoghurt, frozen berries, sausage rolls and Coca-Cola.

Woolies said this is just the beginning, with the list to grow in the coming weeks and the lowered prices to hold into the future.

Coles promised savings of around 21 per cent in Down Down deals

Coles has announced just under 700 products will be discounted.

Products across meat and seafood, pantry, bakery, frozen, health, and home care will be part of the brand’s Down Down deals for Autumn.

Just like Woolies, the supermarket giant promising the list will grow in the near future however, has called it a “promotion” rather than a long-term promise.

Coles and Woolies price gouging slammed

In March, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) found that Woolies, Coles and Aldi were among the most profitable supermarket chains in the world.

The consumer watchdog also accused Coles and Woolworths of misleading customers with discount pricing and took them to court in September 2024.

It was alleged that the chains were increasing prices before applying discounts, to create the illusion of a special, when really prices were the same as or higher than the original prices.
