A minor chemical explosion at Sydney University has sent three people to hospital. The reaction occurred when a worker was transporting two acid-based chemicals in a bucket, causing a cloud of vapour and an explosion.

One person received burns to his hands and was taken to hospital by NSW Ambulance. Two nearby tradespeople were also transported as a precaution.
Fire crews are attending the site to clean the chemicals, and called for a specialist HAZMAT crew to assist. The area has been closed off to staff and students.
The university said there is no ongoing safety risk to the community.
“If you were in the vicinity of the G09 and G12 locations this morning, are suffering from any of the following symptoms, or think you were exposed to any chemicals, please seek immediate medical advice. Itchiness to skin/eyes and irritation to respiratory tract.”
The Australian reports SafeWork and the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) have been informed of the incident.
