Australian chef de mission Anna Meares, issued a safety warning to the Australian Olympic team.
She urged athletes to avoid wearing their uniforms and not to venture out alone.
“We encouraged them if they go out of the village not to go out on their own, not to wear team uniforms, just to wear plain clothes,” Meares said.
“It is based on the security advice that we’ve received and just ensuring the safety of our athletes.”
Meares said they haven’t received any feedback from athletes that have safety concerns.
“Information we’re passing on to our athletes is that security presence is really really high and that’s in order for them to be able to act as quickly as possible to keep them safe.”
