The Albanese Government has confirmed Australian childcare workers will receive a 15 per cent pay rise by Christmas.
The wage boost will be phased in over two years, starting with a 10 per cent increase from December, and the remaining 5 per cent from next December.
Hear more about what this means for childcare workers in today’s episode of The Briefing, ‘What the Olympics and shoplifting have in common‘:
It comes with a catch. Centres will have to promise to limit their fee increases in order to be eligible. Centre fees cannot increase by more than 4.4% over the next 12 months.
The measure is being fully funded by the government at a cost of $3.6 billion.
That’ll mean an extra $155 per week in the pocket of the average worker by the end of 2025.
The industry comprises 95 per cent female workers and has been slammed with worker shortages.
The funding has been set for two years to allow the Fair Work Commission to finalise its gender undervaluation review.
