At least 11 people killed after car drives into Vancouver festival

Police in Vancouver say the number of people killed after a car drove into a crowded festival has risen to 11.

The suspect drove into pedestrians at the annual Lapu Lapu festival, which celebrates Filipino culture.

Acting police chief Steve Rai says a 30-year-old man who was allegedly behind the wheel is in custody.

“While I’m not prepared to speak about the potential. Motive, I can now say with confidence that the evidence in this case does not lead us to believe this was an act of terrorism.”

He says the man has a significant history of interactions with police and health professionals relating to mental health.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said more than 20 people were injured in the incident, which occurred on Saturday night.

Philippines President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr said he was “shattered to hear about the terrible incident”, adding that the Philippine consulate would assist Canadian authorities to investigate the tragedy.
