‘America’s decline is over’: Trump sworn in as US president

The United States‘ 47th president, Donald Trump, says, “The golden age of America begins right now”.

“From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world,” President Trump said in his inaugural address.

“We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer during every single day of the Trump administration, I will, very simply, put America first,” he said.

President Trump was officially sworn in for his second term in the White House in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Australia time, while his Vice-President, JD Vance, was sworn in as the 50th vice-president.

He used his speech to acknowledge his assassination attempting, saying he was “saved by god to make America great again”.

“I felt then and believe even more so now that my life was saved for a reason,” he said.

The new president wasted no time declaring his first major changes in power, vowing he would immediately declare a national emergency at the US-Mexico border.

“All illegal entry will immediately be halted and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the place they came,” he said.

President Trump said Mexican cartels would also be designated as foreign terrorist groups and that he would invoke a law from 1798 to use federal and state law enforcement to eliminate criminal networks in the United States.

He also signed his first executive order as president, with the United States to return to be flown at full-staff, after former president Joe Biden‘s order that it would be flown at half-staff in honour of the late former US president Jimmy Carter.
