Noel Gallagher has revealed how he spent his first million-dollar cheque after going from rags to riches through rock.
The seven-figure cheque dropped into Noel’s account a few months after the wild success of his band Oasis’ 1995 album What’s The Story Morning Glory.
The album sold a remarkable 300,000 copies in its first week of release in the UK, fuelled by the success of the classic hit Wonderwall.
“It felt like every couple of weeks somebody would phone up and say it’s sold another million albums. You’re just like ‘Great’, Noel tells LiSTNR’s Front and Centre podcast, hosted by Ella Hooper.
“I remember being in a rented basement flat in Camden, didn’t belong to me, not even any of my furniture. Someone phoned me up and said ‘I’ve just put a million pounds in your bank account’. I said ‘You might not speak to me for a few days, I’m going out to take lots of drugs, I’ll be back in a bit’. When the money starts piling up you start thinking ‘How many chimps has Michael Jackson got? I want one if he’s got one.”
