This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of Queen releasing their first album.
On this day, April 6, in 1973 the band signed their first recording contract with EMI.
Queen started as a band called Smile, with the classic Queen line-up coming together in 1971.
Their first single ‘Keep Yourself Alive’ would drop on July 9, 1973, although it failed to chart.
Their self-titled debut album would be released on July 13, reaching No.32 in the UK.
After the band found success the album would belatedly peak at No.24, however it still remains the lowest-charting studio album of their entire career on the British charts. It is their only album to not crack the Top 20.
