While David Bowie is now considered one of the most iconic rock musicians of all time, success didn’t come instantly.
On this day, April 1, in 1966 David Bowie released his first single – Do Anything You Say.
It was issued on Pye Records and followed a few tracks under his real name Davey Jones.
Do Anything You Say was produced by UK music legend Tony Hatch, who would go on to write the Neighbours theme.
However not only did the single fail to chart anywhere, reviewers called it ‘messy’ and ‘unimaginative’
In a 2016 fan ranking of every Bowie single, Do Anything You Say ranked 111 out of 119 releases.
