“Simply The Best” – Matt’s Tribute To Barry Humphries
Australia was rocked on the weekend with the sad news of the death of comedy icon Barry Humphries. The man who brought us Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson, amongst others.
Clearly, Barry influenced many a comedian and actor in this country, including our very own Matt Dyktynski, who wrote him some lyrics to commemorate his passing.
The Fifties in Australia, such a different time, Our meat and three veg was a culture so white, And you came along, Showed us just how straight we were.
You conquered the world with your suburban Dame, And you shook us all out of our colonial malaise, You are your cravat, Put Australia on the map.
You were simply the best, Never just average, Dame Edna Everage, Said the things that couldn’t be said, At age 89, The universe said ‘Barry, it’s time’, No one call for you this final time, Hang up your dress and head for the light.
Characters that showed the full spectrum of tone, From the filthy Les Patterson to the sad Sandy Stone, And florists everywhere said teary goodbyes, For all that you did for the gladioli.
