Rove McManus is known for his catchphrase “say hi to your mum for me” while hosting his chat show Rove Live.
But how did the phrase come about?
Rove sat down with Jimmy and Nath to tell the hilarious origin story.
Rove McManus hosted Rove Live from 1999 to 2009 and during that decade, the famous catchphrase “say hi to your mum for me” quickly took off.
Jimmy Smith from the Jimmy and Nath show asks Rove if people still ask him that question to this day?
“What I get is people coming up to me saying, ‘Hi Rove, mum says hi,'”
“Which is great!” Rove says.
But what’s the story of how the famous phrase was coined?
“I was on a phone call with a mate of mine, and he was going to visit his parent for the weekend,”
“I said, have a good time and then I paused and went, oh and say hi to your mum for me.” Rove says.
Rove explains his other friend who only heard the tail end of the conversation, looked at him strangely.
“He was like, ‘that’s a really weird thing to say at the end of a phone call’,”
Despite genuinely asking how his friend’s mum is, others have misunderstood the intent over the years.
“All the people who have come up to me going, ohh what you say about what you’ve done with people’s mums!”
“And I’m like what!? No, that’s not what I meant!” Rove says.
