Mitch Tambo has been keeping us entertained since he sky-rocketed to fame after reaching the finals of Australia’s Got Talent back in 2019.
As a singer-songwriter and proud Gamilaraay man, Mitch has used his platform to give the people of his culture a voice and shining a spotlight on Australia’s indigenous.
Mitch tells Jess in the latest episode of The Jess Rowe Big Talk Show, that while his fame has allowed him to make a difference on behalf of his people, he regularly cops racial abuse online.
The true reality of… me and my walk is I’ll never be accepted by both sides of the fence completely.
Mitch Tambo
“So, there’s people in my community that love and accept me and there’s people that just don’t because of how I look.
“There’s people on the other side of the fence, not Aboriginal people, that love and accept me and there’s people that never will in a million years because of how I look. “
With a significant amount of backlash from the people he has dedicated his career to entertaining, Mitch said it’s not always easy to push through.
“It was a rude shock for sure and it was a harsh one, but I feel like it was one that I needed because moving forward I feel so much more centred in who I am and where I’m going and what my purpose is, because you know, if that couldn’t break me, I don’t think anything will,” he said.
“I know who I am and where I’m going and that’s all matters and all that matters is that I stay true to my purpose and set a good example for my daughters and that they truly see what it’s like to chase your dream and stay true to who you are and what you believe in.”
In this raw chat with Jess, Mitch walks us through the mountains he’s had to climb throughout his career and what keeps him inspired to continue creating art despite the haters.
